Product Details

Hudson is a black plain-toe derby made with shell cordovan. The plain toe keeps the front free of a cap seam, making the shape of the upper the focus.

Leather and finish

The upper is shell cordovan, with horse leather lining and a cowhide insole.

Construction and sole

Goodyear-welted construction is paired with a leather sole with Vibram® rubber patches. The listed heel height is 5 cm.

I’ve owned a few Goodyear-welted shoes and these feel solidly put together. The sole is thicker than a traditional dress shoe, which I actually like for everyday wear. Just don’t expect them to feel lightweight.

Wore these with charcoal trousers to a dinner and they worked really well. The camel-colored laces add a subtle contrast to the black leather. I may switch to black laces for more formal occasions.

The leather is the first thing I noticed when I opened the box. It feels dense and smooth, and the finish looks better in person. Took a couple wears to loosen up, which I expected with this kind of leather.

I like the simple plain-toe shape more than I expected. The thicker sole gives these a little more presence without making them look too casual. They’re definitely heavier than my usual dress shoes, though.

The shell cordovan has a really nice depth to the black that doesn’t come across in photos. They felt pretty substantial at first, but after a few wears they started to feel much more natural on my feet.
